Japan Flickr Gallery

This gallery I created can be used as an activator prior to begin our study of Japan in first grade. Teacher will guide students through discussions based on the photographs of this gallery to activate prior knowledge as well as use what they know to think about what they will learn about as well as generate questions based on this gallery.

I had never used Flickr before but once I got the hang of it, I can see how it can be very useful in the classroom. Basically I am using photographs taken from around the world and have never stepped foot in many of these places. It is easy to create a gallery and it is stimulating and able to keep children’s attention because they are real photos. Although I created this as an activator, you could use it to create virtual field trips, lessons, or have students create their own based on their own findings. It is a great way for students to learn about licensing of photographs and understand intellectual property rights through Creative Common licensing on the photographs they upload.
